The best dreams of connoisseurs and Atari fans are coming true, as the newly introduced 2600+ will be able to play old 2600 and 7800 cartridges as well. What’s more, the original-style CX40+ will be available with a joystick for just under $130 – in the US.
Atari has come up with the new, but of course nostalgic, plastic foil panel game console, promising to be the most detailed recreation of the original Atari 2600 console since its debut nearly 46 years ago. The device is now available for pre-order, and will be released on November 17. In addition to the console, the package includes a CX40+ joystick and a single game cartridge, although the buyer will also find 10 games on this. Among them are such legends as Adventure, Combat, Yars Revenge and the wonderful Missile Command.
A according to Tuesday’s announcement the Atari 2600+ was created together with the European game developer PLAION. The new console is slightly smaller than the original version launched in 1977, but the “Power”, “TV Type”, “Game Select” and “Game Reset” switches are identical to the last millimeter of those on the old console. They work on 2600.
What’s even better news is that it can actually play old Atari 2600 game cartridges as well as later games released for the 7800. The console has HDMI output and widescreen mode, so it can be seamlessly connected to any modern TV or monitor. Among the upgrades, the USB power connector and the selection of several screen resolutions also play a role.
The new 2600+ runs on a Rockchip 3128 SOC and has the same amount of DDR3 RAM in addition to 256MB of internal storage. That’s more than enough to run any of the 2600’s range of games. users still have the option to upgrade: Atari offers an additional CX40+ separately for $25, while the CX-30+ Paddle Controller costs $40. The good news is that the new console uses the same 9-pin connectors, so any old controller will work.
