Compulsory schooling in Germany varies by state, which means that different rules apply as to when a child has to go to school.

The school entry age is generally between 5 and 7 years. This means that if your child reaches the age of 6 before the specified deadline of the respective federal state, it must go to school at the earliest possible starting date – compulsory schooling comes into force.
