There are encounters that we really do not expect. In the middle of a fishing trip off Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), Friday August 18, 2023, Luc Ceillier wondered what funny animal was splashing around in the sea, a few fathoms from their boat.
A dolphin ? “We thought about it. But since he wasn’t jumping…” A seal? “Lack of chances there too”. We had to face the facts. And what funny evidence. A wild boar, snout in the air, swimming at full speed towards their boat. In fifty years of sea fishing, Luc had never seen this before.
“We had the impression that he wanted to come on board”
We approached him. He did the same. He was swimming very fast in our direction. It looked like he wanted to come on board. We didn’t insist, we moved away. We didn’t want to disturb him. We let him continue on his way to the harbor of Rothéneuf.

The unlikely meeting took place at the Rochefort beacon, three kilometers off Rothéneuf. “I wonder if there is a minimum size for wild boar fishing at sea”, jokes Luc Ceillier, surprised by the power of this swimmer who often weighs more than 100 kilos.

An excellent swimmer
Not so surprising as animal specialists will tell you: the wild boar, an animal reputed to be very intelligent, equipped with a “GPS” in its head, is also an excellent swimmer. The best of all land mammals. He swims “with his body sunk”, his four legs going forward with only his nose sticking out, which allows him to go fast.

It is said to be able to chain the kilometers in the water. In Loire-Atlantique, it is not uncommon to see it between Pornic and Noirmoutier, where hunters consider it sufficiently armed to travel 15 to 20 km by sea.
Closer to home, the remains of a large wild boar had been discovered on the island of Cézembre, in the spring of 2021. A few days before a microlight pilot captured, from the air, the pictures of a herd swimming in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
In 2013, a wild boar was even found (alive) on the Channel Island of Alderney, yet distant from the French coast by… 11 kilometers!
