Legal battle over illegal occupation of vacant building in Caen by 12 families from Georgia, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire

Since June 8, twelve families, installed for some for years in France, originating from Georgia, Azerbaijan, Nigeria or even Côte d’Ivoire, are illegally occupying a building in Caen. Situation that led the lessor to take legal action to evict them on August 8, the hearing of which was postponed to Thursday August 24, at the Caen court.

A building that has been vacant for 18 months

Contacted by telephone, the lawyer for the 40 people concerned, Alexandra Maillard assures us that “it is indeed an “empty building, and unoccupied for 18 months”, but of which Inolya (the lessor), claims to want to rehabilitate, to then resell it. Now, she points, “In the four blocks of buildings, two are already occupied by tenants. This rehabilitation project has not yet started.

The 115 saturated, no places for social housing

If they are evicted, where will these 12 families live? For the lawyer, the mystery remains, especially since many solutions have been tested: a call to 115, the emergency number for homeless people, but without success, since saturated with requests, just like for social housing, which already has a long waiting list. The lawyer assures her, the families follow French lessons, and are volunteers in associations.

Several children educated in Caen

But the situation turns out to be quite delicate, since among the 20 children, theMost have already been educated for years in primary schools, colleges and high schools in Caen and the agglomeration. With the start of the new school year approaching, this greatly worries the lawyer:“We can’t leave the children like that, in the street.”*

Families supported by associations and teachers

For his part, the lessor accuses him, the illegal occupants of the building of having let the premises deteriorate…which the lawyer denies, who ensures that everything is in good condition. In honor of the families, support movements are therefore organized: a rally is notably planned in front of the Caen judicial court, this Thursday, August 24, before the hearing. Associations, relatives of families and teachers of school children will be present.
