Controversial Scary Statue in Bangkok’s Bazaar Hotel Sparks Concerns and Speculation

Jakarta

The four meter high statue of the god was asked to be demolished. Because, the appearance is too scary to make people afraid.

Reported from Daily Star, Wednesday (23/8/2023), the statue of the scary god is said to be the figure of Dewa Khru Kai Kaeo. The statue is located in the Bazaar Hotel on Ratchadaphisek Road, Bangkok, Thailand.

Currently, the statue has been moved out of sight of the public but remains in the Bazaar Hotel.

The statue has a black gargoyle-like appearance and is four meters high. In addition, the statue has red eyes and fingernails and yellow fangs.

Why is it only highlighted after it’s installed? According to regulations, only statues over 10 meters high require an installation permit from the Bangkok city government. Well, the statue is not up to 10 meters high.

Previously, the statue was highlighted because it was stuck on a bridge on Wednesday (9/8/2023). At that time, the statue was about to be transported to the Huai Khwang temple.

The statue is also considered very strange because it is not clear what god it represents. In fact, CTN News reported that some residents were concerned that the statue was Satanic worship.

According to the media, reports claim that after the bridge incident, pilgrims started buying cats, dogs and rabbits to sacrifice.

Historians have also disputed claims by some that the statue depicts a mentor of Jayavarman VII, a former king in the Khmer Empire.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, said that he had ordered the permanent secretary of the BMA to confirm whether the statue was against any laws or regulations. And so far no violations have been found.

“As the statue is clearly visible from Ratchadaphisek Road, its eerie appearance might scare passers-by and commuters. We understand that the statue makes some people feel uncomfortable. We will try our best to find a solution.” he said quoted from Bangkok PostTuesday (22/8).

Announced by the secretary of the Governor of Bangkok, Pimuk Simaroj, an agreement has been reached between the BMA and the hotel to cover the statue with screens so that it is not directly visible from the road.

“We have to consider the needs of two groups of people, those who are not happy to see the statue and the pilgrims who don’t want the statue to be moved,” he said.

“The screens will prevent passers-by from seeing them, but allow worshipers to pay their respects,” he said.
