The Rise of Cheaper Flexible Smartphones: Samsung’s Fan Edition and Future Possibilities

The fan edition may also concern flexible Samsungs
The first cheaper jigsaw could arrive as early as next year
Would the lower price tempt you to buy a flexible phone?

The total market share of flexible smartphones is relatively negligible compared to phones with a conventional design, but it is continuously increasing. For example, Samsung already has five generations of jigsaws under its belt, and each new one always sells better than the previous one. This year the Koreans expect to sell up to 15 million units, next year this number could be even dramatically larger.

Jigsaw puzzles could become cheaper next year

There are two main things that discourage customers from buying flexible smartphones – the poor durability of flexible displays and the high price. The first shortage will probably not happen for some time, because there is no clear, flexible and durable material on the market. However, a drop in prices is certainly not excluded.

According to the Revegnus informant, Samsung is said to be considering cheaper jigsaws belonging to the FE family, i.e. “fan edition”. Under its banner, the Korean company sent several smartphones to the world, which played the role of lightweight flagships with a lower price and acceptable compromises. A similar approach could be used by Samsung for flexible smartphones, which could receive, for example, a weaker chipset, worse cameras or older flexible display technology under the “FE” banner.

Revegnus claims that we could expect cheaper foldables from Samsung as early as next year, after the premiere of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 models. Samsung would not be the first manufacturer to introduce a more expensive and cheaper foldable in the same year – this year for example, Motorola did with clamshell models Razr 40 and 40 Ultra.

Galaxy S23 FE in preparation

Samsung is currently preparing a fan edition of the Galaxy S23 flagship smartphone. The phone is expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks, with a 6.4″ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a two-year-old Exynos 2200 chipset, 8GB of RAM, a 50-megapixel main camera and 4500mAh battery with 25W charging support.
