NEW YORK — One person was killed and four others were injured, including minors, during a shooting at an illegal party involving about 60 people at a Long Island venue, police said during a news conference. It was considered illegal because they were selling tickets at the entrance and alcohol, police added.
The fatality was a 20-year-old Brooklyn man, police said. It was reported that three of the injured are 17 years old, one of them a woman, and one of them a 12-year-old boy. The victims were transported to the hospital and are expected to recover.
The motive for the deadly shooting in Valley Stream was not clear, but there was a large presence of Nassau County Police officers in the Ocean Avenue area for much of early Tuesday morning. Witnesses pointed out that the shooting occurred in a space called Dopies.
Authorities said a total of 8 shots were fired with a semi-automatic pistol and they are looking for the alleged shooter who was wearing dark clothing and was last seen fleeing to Queens. The suspect was walking outside the site and fired a shot from outside, police said.
A partygoer said it was a friendly farewell to summer event attended by mostly young people before the gathering turned violent. People started running around the block right after the incident.
Those who live in the area said it is highly unusual for a shooting or something similar to occur in the residential neighborhood.
Witnesses said they saw several people who had suffered injuries. It was not immediately clear if the injured had been shot or otherwise injured. Police did not share information related to the victims.
Video showed officers securing the neighborhood and searching for evidence.
The county will increase the pressure and shut down these types of parties, while the owner of the event venue could face charges.
The street remained closed to traffic for hours. An investigation is ongoing.
