Spotted lanternflies like the ones in the video are harmless to humans, but experts say they are a threat to 70 types of plants in New York state.
“We are very concerned about the grape industry,” Chris Logue, director of the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets for the grape industry, said during a demonstration of strategies to eliminate this pest originally from China.
These flies feed on the sap of the stems and leaves, causing the plants to become weak.
In addition, they leave fluids on the plants known as dew honey, causing fungi that attract other insects.
State officials and representatives from Cornell University urge New Yorkers to stomp on them and kill them on sight.
They also recommend the use of traps that can be purchased or made at home.
Another way to eliminate them is to use a card and scratch the area on top of your vehicle’s tires where experts say these insects lay their eggs.
