In a statement he made in New Delhi before departing for South Africa, he expressed his anticipation that the BRICS Summit would provide a useful opportunity for all member states to identify areas for future cooperation.
“BRICS has become a platform for discussing and deliberating on issues of interest in the Global South (commonly referred to as emerging and developing countries mainly located in the southern hemisphere),” he said.
It is a matter of diplomatic interest whether Prime Minister Modi can hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit.
In response to a question about this, Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra hinted that the meeting had not yet been finalized, saying Prime Minister Modi’s schedule was still in progress the previous day.
The reason why bilateral talks are attracting attention is that relations between the two countries have deteriorated since Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Ladakh, the site of a border dispute in June 2020, and it is believed that a clue to a solution can be found through bilateral talks.
If the bilateral talks are concluded, Prime Minister Modi and President Xi will meet face-to-face for the first time since the clash in Ladakh.

Regarding the prospect that membership expansion for external expansion will be a major agenda at the BRICS Summit, Vice Minister Kwatra said, “We have positive intentions and an open mind.”
Last month, a senior South African diplomat explained that more than 40 countries had expressed interest in participating in the BRIC, including Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Comoros, Gabon and Kazakhstan. .
