The province of Zeeland has asked the central government to help Zeeland municipalities accommodate status holders. This can be done, for example, by simplifying the rules regarding housing or by giving money to housing corporations, reports Broadcasting Zeeland.

Until now, Zeeland has mostly succeeded in providing accommodation for status holders – asylum seekers who are allowed to stay in the Netherlands. But if the government obliges municipalities to take in more and more people, that will become increasingly difficult, says housing deputy Dick van der Velde. The province therefore wants to talk to the Ministry of the Interior.

The backlog is growing fast

Once again, there is a threat of a major backlog in housing status holders. Municipalities must house 27,300 status holders this fall, on top of the 5,000 who were not accommodated in the first half of this year.

In order to meet the target for this year, municipalities must reserve around 6,000 homes for status holders every month until the end of December. That is most likely not feasible. In July, municipalities helped around 2,500 status holders find a home.
