Discovering the Riches of the Parcours des Chibottes: A Journey Through Heritage and Environmental Treasures

The Parcours des chibottes, thanks to the many developments made in the surrounding area, is now at the center of a set of heritage and environmental riches present in the Dolaizon valley.

A nice story

While the Valladière town has around thirty chibottes, the Parcours (or Sentier) des chibottes offers visitors the possibility of discovering several of them. Forming a 5.7 km loop partly taking the road to Santiago de Compostela, it takes about 2 hours to enjoy it properly (a 1.7 km variant has also been made). The Chibottes route presents a real tourist attraction

These “dry stone huts”, built by peasant builders with stones from the stones removed from their plots of land which they cultivated nearby, are bordered by orchards, vineyards and other crops which were planted in terraces: the “rooms”, supported by dry stone walls. These constructions are also of different shapes and sizes, since some have two floors. An ingenious way of storing stones, the chibotte is a waterproof shelter. The oldest date from the 18th and 19th centuries. There are about thirty in this sector and about sixty in total in the upper Dolaizon valley. Several Chibottes are to be visited

The Parcours des chibottes therefore allows you to discover the volcanic stone through a beautiful route where walkers cross the immense volcanic landslide, unique in the Velay.
Finally, everyone will understand how man has used the stone and the relief of this volcano to plant crops there.
Chibotte de la petite valladière, Chibotte de Perbet, Chibotte d’Odile, Chibotte du Grand Duc or Chibotte du Crouzas are all terms that will become familiar to visitors when they visit the Parcours des chibottes.
The site is also surrounded by several places that are worth seeing, such as the plots of vines maintained with passion by the Valladière des Vignerons association or the recent footbridge 28 meters long and 70 centimeters wide above the Dolaizon. footbridge over the Dolaizon.

Finally, from Friday August 25 to Sunday August 27, the Festi’Vals des Chibottes will also give pride of place to this environment, giving it the role of a rural setting. For three days, between the Valladier town and the Parcours des chibottes, a program rich in entertainment concocted for the whole family will be set up with shows, workshops, discovery of the site and meals in the heart of nature. To end this weekend of festivities, the Foulée des Vignerons, a renowned local race, will allow participants to tread this place steeped in history.
