Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters – Unique Exhibition of Photo Art by Sandro Miller and John Malkovich

The unique exhibition of photo art is the joint work of two creatively bright personalities – the Italian-born American photographer Sandro Miller (Sandro Miller, SANDRO) and the notable American film and theater actor, director John Malkovich (John Malkovich). They have been friends for years, and Malkovich has been Miller’s model on several occasions.

In the series of works “Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: a tribute to the masters of photography” (“Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters“) Sandro Miller paraphrases the images created by several classics of 20th century photography – both portraits of celebrities and images of unknown people who became famous thanks to specific photographs.

The compositions, lighting, poses and clothing of the models are reconstructed in the paraphrases of the original, iconic photographs. Only the figures depicted – Irving Penn’s cornered Truman Capote, Burt Stern’s stripped Marilyn Monroe, Dorothea Lange’s classic Immigrant Mother, Richard Avedon’s Man with Bees, Robert Mapplethorpe’s self-portrait and many others – have been replaced by the one and only… John Malkovich.

The tandem of artists – photographer and actor – creates an exciting and critical game between canonized images and their repetitions, ironically commenting on the influence of individual personalities and images in the development of photography. Pictures are not processed. The characters were created with the help of make-up, costumes and lighting. And, of course, with the talent of an actor and photographer. Some pictures will really be very similar to the original. Others will look like a gentle parody, and some will seem like a grotesque caricature.

Sandro Miller (1958) has achieved outstanding success in advertising and portrait photography, working with influential brands (American Express, Coca-Cola, BMW) and magazines (Forbes, GQ, Esquire). At the same time, he develops art projects in the field of photography and cinema. The author’s personal exhibitions have been held on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean – from his home in Chicago to European and Asian museums and exhibition halls.

The series of works under consideration in Riga has received wide recognition – it has been exhibited, reproduced and reviewed many times. Now, nine years after the first exhibition at the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago (Catherine Edelman Gallery, 2014) and a brilliant presentation at the important Arles photo festival (Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie, 2015), it will also be available to those interested in Latvia. In 2015, the SANDRO project received the prestigious Lucie Foundation award in the “International Photographer of the Year” category.

On August 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., a lecture and presentation by Sandro Miller about his work.
