Microsoft’s Restructured Deal with Ubisoft: Transfer of Activision Blizzard’s Cloud Game Streaming Rights

The agreement of almost 60 billion euros that will allow Microsoft to buy Activision Blizzard is about to have a change: the transfer of the rights of games in the cloud to Ubisoft.

This was the response to objections from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA – the UK competition and market regulator) in relation to the original deal, in which the entire Activision Blizzard catalog was purchased by Microsoft.

Thus, the collection of streaming games from the publisher responsible, among other games, for Call of Duty (featured image), passes to Ubisoft – however, there is still no guarantee that the CMA will give the green light to this merger. At the moment, a new investigation has been opened, which will only be concluded on 18 October.

“To address concerns about the impact of the cloud game streaming acquisition raised by the CMA, we are restructuring the transaction to acquire a more restricted set of rights,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith.

According to the same, this restructuring “includes an agreement, with effect from the conclusion of the merger, which transfers the streaming rights in the cloud of all current and new PC and console games from Activision Blizzard, released in the next fifteen years to to Ubisoft». Brad Smith also guaranteed that the rights will be transferred to Ubisoft in a “perpetual” way.

Among other implications, this new deal between Microsoft and Ubisoft means that Activision Blizzard games cannot launch exclusively on Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The details of this agreementcan be known on the CMA website.
