Campbell Stokes is a tool to measure the intensity of sunlight in a certain period of time. This tool was invented by John Francis Campbell in 1853 and later completed by Sir George Stokes Gabriel in 1879. From this, we can see that Campbell and Stokes taken from the last names of the two scientists who invented the tool.

Campbell Stokes consists of a transparent glass sphere 10-15 cm in diameter that acts as a convex lens. When sunlight enters the lens, the rays will be gathered into a hot spot. Underneath the ball, there is a piece of dark colored cardboard that is flammable, its name is Pias Paper. It is on this paper that sunlight will be transmitted from the lens and form trails of hot spots according to the movement of the sun across the sky. The level and duration of the sun’s intensity can be determined by synchronizing the length of the scorch marks with the hour scale on the Papier Pias. To obtain optimal results, this tool must be placed in an open space with a concrete foundation as high as 120 cm.
