Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Thaksin, who was overthrown in a military coup in 2006 and has been living a fugitive life abroad since 2008, arrived at the airport in Bangkok on the 22nd and returned to Japan. While the former prime minister received strong support from the country’s poor, he faced opposition from the pro-monarchy elite, who supported his dismissal in a coup d’état.
In the country, political parties pro-Thaksin and the military-backed establishment were doing business.

Convicted of four corruption charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison, Thaksin was detained by police authorities upon his arrival in Bangkok. He is then transferred to the Supreme Court.
Thailand will hold a prime ministerial election on this day. Thaksin’s party agreed to formally join forces with the conservative party, which had previously been close to the military. The candidate for prime minister of this force is real estate tycoon Sureta Thavishin.
