NEW YORK — A driver allegedly struck several pedestrians Sunday night in a busy area of Manhattan just blocks from Times Square, New York City Police said.
The accident occurred just before midnight at the corner of 36th Street and Sixth Avenue when the driver, identified as 29-year-old Imani Lucas, would have run a red light and run over 7 people with a Honda Accord, added the authorities.
Among the injured there is a 34-year-old woman and 6 men with ages ranging from 24 to 61 years, according to the uniformed. None of the injuries are considered critical, according to police, but one of the victims who sustained serious injuries was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, police said.
The woman behind the wheel of the Honda continued to drive after the accident, according to police, and made it as far as Queens before officers caught up with her on the Long Island Expressway. That’s where she was involved in another accident, police said, this time involving two other vehicles near Fresh Meadows. She was arrested at Horace Harding Expressway and 188″ Street, according to police.
Lucas was arrested at the scene of the second accident. It was not clear if anyone was injured in the Queens incident, nor what charges she was facing.
Traffic was closed for hours in the area near the scene in the center of the city. An investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are investigating the facts and did not release any further details.
