At the largest airport in the country, Otopeni airport, some ride-sharing drivers cancel passengers’ rides, and then negotiate the cash price, enough to get extra after paying for parking. Others don’t even bother to accept orders, they approach customers directly from the parking lot. A Digi24 experiment shows that the price asked for a ride often ends up being double, and the practice has become a habit.

The experiment started at 12:20 p.m., at Otopeni airport at the Arrivals terminal. A Digi24 reporter tried to take a car home and wanted to see if the driver takes customers through the app or asks for cash.

Hidden Camera Filming:

Driver: Do you need a car?

Reporter: Yes. To the Phenicia Hotel. Do I need to order?

Driver: No.

Reporter: Well, how do I do it?

Driver: Cash.

Reporter: Cash? And how much do you take from me?

Driver: 80 lei.

Reporter: Well, on the application it asks me for 50 lei.

Driver: Yes, but I have to pay for parking.

After the reporter refused the order, no more than a minute passed and a second driver, from the same company, pulled up and wanted to know, first of all, if it was a long run.

Hidden Camera Filming:

Driver: Let’s see how many kilometers there are.

Reporter: Do not take on the application?

Driver: You can send me Revolut if you don’t have cash.

Reporter: I don’t have Revolut.

Driver: How much does it show on the app?

Reporter: 50.

Driver: Well, that’s why nobody leaves.

Reporter: You mean no one will take me for 50 lei? So how much do you charge me?

Driver: Well, at least to pay for the parking. 70 lei in total.

Reporter: And on the application if he asks me for 50 lei.

Driver: Well, I understand you, but… many cancel you. All drivers, perhaps too rarely found. If you want I can help you and we will stop somewhere to take out.

The Digi24 experiment is experienced daily by hundreds of tourists. A passenger tells on social networks that she had to walk home at night after arriving at Otopeni airport and was unable to find a car, although she allegedly tried several times to place an order. The drivers canceled all his rides, the moment they reached the meeting point, so he could negotiate cash payment.

Passenger: “I was told very clearly, 150 lei per km. I thought I didn’t hear well. Nobody accepts anything, only cash and negotiation at the horse’s muzzle. And the risk is high that you could negotiate an amount and wake up when you arrive with another.”

In a response to Digi24, the ride-sharing company encourages users to report any unpleasant situations directly in the app and says it analyzes this data to identify drivers with a high rate of canceling rides: “We encourage users to report any unpleasant situations directly in the app. Our operations team is constantly analyzing the data generated by the app and identifying drivers with a high rate of canceling rides.”

For its part, the Bucharest National Airport Company claims that it has not received complaints from passengers related to such practices of ride-sharing drivers.
