Reuters reported on the 20th local time that the government dispatched troops to respond as forest fires spread out of control in western Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that 35,000 people in British Columbia have been evacuated due to wildfires, and troops are being sent to help put out the wildfires.
British Columbia declared a state of emergency on the 18th after wildfires spread rapidly through the interior out of control. An evacuation order was issued for 35,000 people, followed by an evacuation warning for 30,000 people.
British Columbia Premier David Ivey has banned non-essential travel for residents to secure accommodation for firefighters and displaced people.
Authorities urged people not to fly drones as they could avoid travel to the fire area and impede firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the fire.
The Trans-Canada Highway, which connects Canada east-west, was closed between the neighborhoods of Chase, about 400 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and the towns of Hope and Lyton, 150 kilometers east.
The Northwest Territory, adjacent to the Arctic Ocean, also declared a state of emergency due to wildfires on the 15th and issued an evacuation order for 20,000 residents.
After the evacuation order was issued, the city became a virtual ghost town as residents evacuated by car and plane, the Associated Press reported.
Wildfires burned 140,000 square kilometers across Canada, the equivalent of the entire state of New York.
At least four firefighters lost their lives in the wildfires, which received support from the federal government and 13 countries.
In the midst of this, strong winds and dry weather are predicted, making it difficult to suppress forest fires.
