Clinging to the rails of the art gallery Ceysson & Bénétière in 2017 rue des Creuses, Sadie Chick returns to the new Saint-Etienne establishment, in full light in four large rooms. Bringing in his suitcases works from 2014 to 2023.

Since 2017, there has been the Covid and the artist, confined away from her New York studio, has devoted herself in the domestic space to cmaking long flags made up of assemblies of fabrics cut with large scissors. Recurring “symbols” on the fabric: a raised hand, declining planes, left hanging.

The exhibition is entitled “Boiling frog syndrome”. A reference to the fable of the frog which plunged into cold water does not react to the gradual heat of the bath brought to the boil. A fable to tell the inertia in the face of events that shake the world, carrying anxiety but perceived with a carefree lightness.

Sadie Laska wryly plays with that gap between the threat of sinking and a joyous perception of the moment conveyed by bright, vibrant colors in older works, resonating with a musical energy familiar to the musician playing as a drummer in a New York band. .

In more recent, post-Covid productions, the return to the brush in the studio has given the gesture back its angry dimension on the surface of strata made up of monotypes and collages, the artist’s trademark.

Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière, 10 rue des Aciéries in Saint-Etienne, until April 22.
