Lionel Messi has been Inter’s captain for a few weeks. After the win against Nashville, he also thought about his predecessor.
WHAT HAPPENED? Lionel Messi has slipped the captain’s armband over his predecessor DeAndre Yedlin after his success in the final of the Leagues Cup against Nashville (10:9 on penalties). With this gesture, the Argentinian obviously wanted to ensure that Yedlin was the first to raise the trophy at the award ceremony. Yedlin was uncomfortable at first, but then he let Messi do it.
WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND? Messi joined Inter Miami from PSG a few weeks ago. From the second game he wore the captain’s armband at the Florida club, before that Yedlin was the team captain.
The decision to change was not made by coach Tata Martino but by Yedlin himself. The journalist reported Katie Witham at Apple TV. Yedlin did this of his own free will as a mark of respect for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner. Martino then only supported the decision.
Messi was already captain in his time at FC Barcelona. He is also Argentina’s captain and led the Albiceleste to their third World Cup title in Qatar in 2022.
