The Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, has its final scheduled. On Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, currently the best tennis players in the world, will face each other in the final.
Spaniard Alcaraz defeated Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 on Saturday, while Djokovic defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev 7-6(5), 7-5.
“It’s great for the sport to have number one and number two facing each other in the final of a major tournament,” Djokovic said in an on-pitch interview. “I think that’s what everyone wanted and expected at the start of the tournament and here we are.”
Alcaraz has to do three sets again
In the head-to-head of the two finalists, Alcaraz is 2-1 ahead of the Serbs. The 20-year-old also won the most recent duel in the Wimbledon final.
Notably, Alcaraz now required three sets in all of his matches in Ohio, including his quarterfinal win over qualifier Max Purcell on Friday.
“People think I’ll be tired in the final, but I feel good,” he told reporters. Djokovic, on the other hand, did not drop a sentence when he returned to the USA, where he was unable to enter the previous year due to his corona vaccination status.
