The Impact of Commonly Consumed Vitamins and Supplements on the Body: Findings from the University of Toronto Study

Some of the most commonly consumed vitamins and supplements have no effect on the body, suggests a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto.

By reviewing data and analyzing case-control studies, the experts found that multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C (the most common supplements) offer no benefit or risk in preventing cardiovascular disease, heart attack, or premature death. According to Science Daily, vitamins and mineral supplements are normally used to supplement nutrients that are not assimilated from food.

“We were surprised to find very few positive effects of the most common supplements that people consume,” said Dr. David Jenkins, the study’s author. “Our study suggests that multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C have no negative effects…but they also have no positive effects,” he added.

The study found that folic acid and B vitamins taken along with folic acid could reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke. ”These results suggest that people should be aware of the supplements they consume and that they be administered for their deficiencies by their doctors,” said Dr. Jenkins.

His team analyzed data on the consumption of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, C, D, E, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and selenium. The term “multivitamin” in the study was used to describe supplements containing most vitamins and minerals.
