The story behind Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band cover art

A picture of The Beatles and a note from their record company’s public relations manager, which refuted a rumor that Paul McCartney did not take part in the photo shoot for the cover of one of their most famous albums, has been offered at an online auction in the UK.

In the photo shoot, McCartney and the other three Beatles pose together in 1967 for the cover of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. In the photo chosen for the cover, the group is in front of life-size cardboard figures of actors, writers and celebrities. The photo is being auctioned in a press pack, which also contains a note from Brian Southall, former general manager of public relations at EMI, who says it refutes rumors that McCartney was not present at the photo shoot.

After the release of the album, often cited as one of the greatest, there was a rumor that McCartney did not attend the filming in Chelsea, south-west London, due to tensions within the band, and that his image was added to the front cover as a result. Another photo used on the album’s back cover features a figure resembling McCartney, but only shot from behind, adding to speculation that he was not present.

Martin Hughes of Wessex Auction House in Chipnham says the “jewel in the crown” in the press pack is the photo, which clearly shows McCartney taking part in the photo shoot.
