CINCINATTI – Top-seeded Iga Swiateková from Poland was eliminated in the singles semifinals at the WTA tennis tournament in Cincinnati. The world number one lost in Saturday’s match to seventh seed Coco Gauff after a three-set battle 6:7 (2), 6:3 and 4:6.

For the nineteen-year-old American, it was the first ever victory over a Polish opponent, in the previous seven duels she could not take a single set from her.

Karolína Muchová will play for the title at a heavily booked tournament in Cincinnati. In today’s semifinals, the Czech tennis player defeated the world number two Aryna Sabalenkova from Belarus 6:7, 6:3, 6:2, and her last opponent in the tournament will be the home American Coco Gauff on Sunday.

Twenty-six-year-old Muchová advanced to the fourth final in her career and the second this year after June’s Roland Garros, where she also eliminated Sabalenkova in the semifinals in a three-set battle. In the fight for the title in Paris, she was not enough for world number one Iga Šwiateková from Poland, who was defeated by Gauffová in the semifinals today in Cincinnati. Muchová won her only triumph on the WTA circuit in September 2019 in Seoul.
