Union’s First Loss of the Season: Union vs KV Mechelen Match Recap

The first loss of the season is a fact for Union, and it is immediately one that can count. Against a fierce KV Mechelen, the team from Brussels lost no less than 4-0 thanks to goals from Mrabti, Hairemans, Belghali and Bates. It is the fourth time in a row that Union loses Achter de Kazerne. Union has thus lost its maximum points, Mechelen allows itself some breathing space.

Union and moves to the field of KV Mechelen: it’s not a good match. Since the return to 1A, the Unionists already lost their previous three encounters in Mechelen, and on Saturday evening number four was also a fact after a fantastic match by the home team.

From minute one, both teams immediately flew in. After pinpricks from Schoofs and Puertas in the opening minutes, Rob Schoofs quickly had the 1-0 at the foot, but Moris took advantage with a nice foot reflex.

Union had been warned, but Mechelen presented itself eagerly on Saturday evening. Union hardly created any chances, Mechelen fought fiercely and was dangerous. At first Storm didn’t play a dangerous counter well enough, but ten minutes before the break it was still a prize: Schoofs found Mrabti on the edge of the sixteen, the Swede brushed past Moris beautifully. KV Mechelen’s first field goal this season was immediately very nice. It didn’t even seem to take long for the second goal from Mechelen, but in two minutes Lauberbach saw his two goals rightly rejected for offside. Union suffered, although it might as well have been 1-1 at half-time: a shot from Puertas hit the crossbar just before half-time.

Union coach Alexander Blessin realized that it had to be better and dropped Gustaf Nilsson into the striker, but he too – just like Eckert – could not really assert himself. In the second half we were presented with fewer chances anyway: Mechelen built in a bit more certainty, shots from Puertas and Hairemans are hardly worth mentioning.

Strong closing quarter

Union looked for the opening in the last half hour, but KV Mechelen played with a knife between their teeth and defended well. Malinwa on the other side got a lot of space on the counter, and it took advantage of that no less than three times in the closing quarter. First Hairemans scored the 2-0 after good preparatory work by Storm, in the end Belghali and Bates also scored their goal. A solid 4-0 defeat for Union, which goes to the European match against Lugano with a bad feeling. Mechelen, on the other hand, convincingly takes its first three-pointer of the season, Union can be leader on Sunday.
