Greet Minnen (WTA 99) is ready for US Open qualifying which begins Tuesday at Flushing Meadows. The Campinoise, 26, who has just returned to the top 100 in the world, will be one of eight Belgians in search in New York of one of the sixteen precious sesames for the final table of the last Grand Slam of the year.
“I’m happy to be back here,” said Greet Minnen. “It’s a tournament that I love. I’m in a positive frame of mind, even if you never know in advance what it’s going to be like. The objective is clearly to qualify, but it will start with play well in the first round. I don’t think I should feel any pressure. We all know that it is not easy to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament. The most important thing will be to focus on my game and to be conquering. It’s also when I’m aggressive and play forward that I’m the best”.
This is the third time that Greet Minnen has had to compete in qualifying for the US Open, after 2019 and 2021. And it was precisely two years ago, after getting out of it, that the native of Turnhout had signed the best result of his career in Grand Slam. She made it to the third round against Canadian Bianca Andreescu, winner in 2019.
“The courts are quite fast and I like that. So the first player to take the initiative will have a big advantage. It’s not extremely hot, but the humidity is always higher here. There’s also a risk of balls flying a little more, because we will play with those of the men’s circuit. So we have to adapt. But with the passing days, it is getting better and better”.
