The military rulers in Niger want a transitional period of “no longer than three years” before installing a civilian government again. Co-leader Tiani said this in a speech on state television last night.
He also proposes a “national dialogue”, which he says will involve all Nigeriens. Those talks, which are to be held next month, should then lead to a new constitution.
Conversation with delegation
The announcement follows a conversation with a delegation from the West African partnership Ecowas. The delegation also spoke with deposed President Bazoum, who has been held captive in the presidential palace since the coup. Ecowas countries have threatened military action if democracy is not restored.
Immediately after the meeting, Tiani said that the junta is open to talks and does not want war, but also that it “wants to defend itself”. The military leader stressed that the transition period should proceed “without outside interference”.
