Dengue Outbreak in Suriname’s Nickerie District: Serious Consequences and Crowded Emergency Care

There has been a dengue plague in Suriname for quite some time, but especially in the Nickerie district. District Commissioner Senrita Gobardhan had organized a clean-up campaign especially in the context of combating the dengue mosquito to ensure that the various neighborhoods are free of possible breeding grounds of the dengue mosquito. But reports of dengue cases keep coming.

Serious consequences

Dengue, known as dengue fever, can have serious consequences for people’s health. Especially babies suffer from dengue diseases. An infected with the dengue virus can quickly deteriorate health after 2 to 5 days.

Crowds at SEH (Emergency Care)

The director of the Mungra Medical Center, Shaista Abdul, says in conversation with the editors of Dagblad Suriname that it is busy at the ER, because in addition to normal complaints, patients also come in with symptoms of influenza and dengue.

She asks the Nickerian community to take this into account when entering the emergency room. She says that there must be good communication between the treating physician and the patients, otherwise noise will arise and this can lead to frustration.

Patients are treated in the emergency department by means of a certain protocol system. This system indicates which patient needs urgent help and which patient will follow next.

Awareness

Especially for awareness among all residents of Nickerie, the management team of the Mungra Medical Center will work on a dengue alert program and then broadcast it, to prevent worse and to make the residents aware of what to do and what not to do when it comes to dengue.
