Surprising Results: Celebrities Make Waves in PASO 2023 Elections

The primary elections last Sunday undoubtedly produced unpredictable results, to say the least. The overwhelming percentages not only established Javier Milei as one of the favourites, but also, the celebrities who applied for pre-candidacies to different fronts of popular election, also obtained favorable numbers that allowed them to cross the STEP threshold and continue in the race to the upcoming national elections for October.

Unexpected for many, a “new air” for others, the show business candidates also added to the great surprises that this electoral party left behind. Names like Marcela Pagano, Maximiliano Guerra or El Dipy, to mention a few, could leave the big stages, the television and radio cycles or the theater tables for an undefined period of time to create projects, defend partisan positions in spaces for public debate and conquer spaces in the ambivalent will of the national electorate.

How did Dipy do in PASO 2023?

David Adrián Martínez, known in the world of cumbia as El Dipy, was the big surprise on election day last Sunday. The artist, who is part of the LLA alliance, had a great acceptance among the voting population in La Matanza, a party in which Peronism historically dominated. The musician made his application official in May of this year and announced it with a photo together with Javier Milei on networks.

In the PASO he reached second place among the voters’ preferences. Although he was surpassed by Fernando Espinoza, the Unión por la Patria candidate, who accumulated 44.62% of the votes, the singer amassed 23.13%, which surpassed the Juntos por el Cambio option.

How Marcela Pagano did in the PASO 2023

Marcela Pagano, journalist and presenter, also presented herself at the PASO as a pre-candidate for national deputy for La Libertad Avanza and her application was highly favored. If the libertarian Javier Milei is the winner of the next contest in October, the media will have ample possibilities of occupying one of the positions as a legislator in Congress. Consulted by TN about this great political step, she stated: “Yes, I expected a very good result from LLA, of course, what did surprise me is that it was the most voted space in practically the entire Argentine territory.”

Although the Liberal candidate stated that she previously received proposals to join various political forces, she decided to join the option she currently represents by affiliation with compatible ideas. “My first mission as a deputy will be to promote the deregulation of all the laws -because we are reviewing them from now on-, which are a waste of time, which have served no purpose, such as the Rental Law and the Gondolas Law, I I believe that they must be repealed,” he said.

How Maximiliano Guerra did in PASO 2023

It is also worth noting the candidates who joined forces with the Together for Change bench. That was the case of the dancer Maximiliano Guerra. The artist appeared in the first position of the list of national deputies for the City of Buenos Aires, by the hand of Patricia Bullrich. His nomination reached 466,245 votes, a reach that, if repeated in October, will allow him to enter the congressional hemicycle.

How Luis Brandoni did in PASO 2023

Another case that also surprised was that of the actor Luis Brandoni, the first candidate for Parlasur in the province of Buenos Aires, who was able to amass 1,350,367 votes in this electoral round, thus remaining as the second representative partisan force, below Unión por la Patria . However, the number of seats obtained could encourage his inclusion in the parliamentary bloc.

The candidacies of celebrities who had less luck within the PASO 2021

One of the celebrities who did not get such a good result was the journalist Mario Markic, who appeared in the PASO as a candidate for governor of Santa Cruz, as one of the internal contenders of the Together for Change bench in this town. Despite his long career in front of the screens, the communicator obtained 2,726 votes, well below Claudio Legizamón, the winning candidate, who won 53,692 votes.

The same situation was repeated with the communicator Guillermo Favale, known for hosting the Argentina en Vivo (C5N) cycle. Championed by the La Costa Party as a candidate for mayor, he came second in the party’s internal elections with just 6,154 votes. In his list, the “Celeste and Blanca 31 ″ the undisputed winner was Juan Pablo De Jesús, with 13,130 votes, more than double the votes obtained by Favale.

The challenge of famous candidates for the October elections

An infallible formula that partisan options embrace between electoral contests is to add figures from the world of entertainment as catalysts for votes. Journalists, singers, influencers, actors and other similar profiles have as a common denominator the great acceptance of the majorities, which means that their proven popularity does not suffer any damage, even when they decide to make these quantum leaps to scenarios such as politics.

Although the results of Sunday, August 13, do not represent an indisputable and definitive scenario for the next elections in October, they do allow us to project where the needle is leaning. This is how Luciana Vázquez, a journalist from La Nación, sees it: “At least, cast doubt on and relativize some linear expectations of triumphs that are also made at the national level for the presidential election”

However, triumphalism is not admissible: celebrities risk the most important value of their staging, credibility.

In the political arena, it is strengthened by close contact and clear proposals. Serving as informational bridges between political representatives and ordinary people is also key to building a path, especially for those who are entering for the first time.

What remains, from now on, is to measure the pulse of the population in terms of the prevailing national reality. The staggering economic crisis and the intensification of social coexistence are incident factors in the country’s mood and response capacity. Whoever manages to capitalize on these issues with concrete answers will get the promise of the vote.
