Ministry of Public Health Conducts Genetic Tests for COVID-19 Mutants in Lebanon

The head of the Epidemiological Surveillance Program at the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Nada Ghosn, revealed that “the ministry is constantly conducting genetic tests to identify corona mutants present in Lebanon, at the National Influenza Center at Rafic Hariri University Hospital. Until now, these tests have not shown the presence of the EG5 mutant known as” Iris”.

Ghosn indicated, in an interview with the “National News Agency”, that “the ministry is persevering in preparing a weekly report on Covid on its website, and the results of genetic tests will be added to the report, and updated results will be issued next week and announced in due time. The new mutant, the Ministry will not hesitate to announce this with full transparency, especially since the Ministry of Public Health has the technical capabilities required to determine the type of mutants that exist.

She pointed out that “the new EG5 mutant was discovered for the first time in February 2023. According to the weekly report of the World Health Organization, this mutant has been recorded in 48 countries for its history. Also, this mutant does not cause an increase in the incidence of complications.”

And she stated that “the ministry had made it clear that what Lebanon is currently witnessing in terms of corona infections does not contradict expectations in a tourist season in which mixing increases in large gatherings, which raises the risk of infection, especially since the Corona virus is rapidly transmitting.”
