It’s no coincidence that the superhero genre has increasingly relied on coming-of-age stories. The genre is already juvenile in its basic idea. The fans are young people or the young at heart who either grew up with the superhero films of the last 35 years or are (even older) comic book aficionados. But lately it’s noticeable that middle-aged superheroes hardly ever make it onto the big screen. Instead, this is populated by youthful Spidermans, Flashes or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even Robert Pattinson’s Batman in 2022 recalled Pattinson’s beginnings as a virgin vampire in Twilight.
