Widespread Teacher Shortage in Quebec Education System: A Foreseeable Crisis

Then, we learned Thursday from the Quebec Federation of Educational Establishment Directors (FQDE) that no less than 5,000 teachers would be missing across the network, excluding Montreal. Noovo Info obtained confirmation of this after the release of the data by La Presse.

These figures remain to be consolidated within the Ministry of Education, but it goes without saying that it is more or less well received in the world of education.

For the president of the Federation of Education Unions, Josée Scalabrini, this situation is quite “discouraging”.

“We find ourselves with a situation that we could have foreseen years ago. The teaching profession has not been valued. And there, we are faced with a serious shortage – I repeat, a shortage which was foreseeable and which we have been denouncing for 10 years”, she declared in an interview with the head of antenna Marie-Christine Bergeron at the newsletter Noovo the wire 17.

“This is the second year that we are hitting the wall,” she added, referring to the 1,400 teachers who were missing before the start of the school year on the same date in 2022.

However, she hopes that the education sector and the government will work together “to find solutions”.

“Let’s let go of the positive talk that education is a priority and take action to prove that education is a priority”

– Josée Scalabrini, President of the Federation of Education Unions

“We have to go find people. We see that many people who are not legally qualified are coming, but everything must be done to send positive signs to the cries of the hearts of the teachers, to all those who are thinking of leaving the profession and who are experienced, “said Mrs Scalabrini.

In order to solve this problem, it would be necessary first and foremost to make “real negotiations”, insists the president.

“We are supposed to have been in negotiations since January. The union party had filed its demands in October. The management party in December and we were supposed to start negotiating in January. There were no negotiations despite the rhetoric in the media. […] If we did sincere and serious negotiations, we would be able to find solutions”, she underlined on the airwaves of Noovo Info.
