Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia One area in Australia has traces of asteroid impacts in the past. The historic trail is buried deep beneath the Australian continent and is known as the Deniliquin structure.

Deniliquin turned out to have a very large size. Additional professor from UNSW Sydney, Andrew Glikson stated the diameter of the impact was up to 520 kilometers.

Its size is much larger than Vredefort in South Africa which is considered the largest in the world. Vredefort is reported to have a diameter of about 300 km.

This finding was originally revealed by Tony Yeates between 1995 and 2000. According to the findings, referring to the magnetic pattern at the bottom of the Murray basin in New South Wales, there is a large structure.

“Analysis of geophysical data updated between 2015 and 2020 confirms the presence of a 520 km diameter structure with a seismically defined dome in the center,” explained Glikson in his article on The ConversationsFriday (18/8/2023).

He said, Deniliquin has all the features of a massive impact. For example, there is a symmetrical ripple pattern around the core of the structure which may have come from collisions with high temperatures and generated strong magnetic forces.

In addition there is also evidence of radial faulting from magnetic measurements. This is a fracture of the center of the impact structure followed by a small magnetic anomaly representing the frozen ‘dyke’.

Radial faults and igneous sheets at Deniliquin have been seen in other structures. Namely the Vredefort structure and the existing Canadian structure called Sudbury.

According to Glikson, most of the report’s evidence comes from geophysical data. This data is obtained from the surface of the structure.

“For impact evidence, we need to collect physical evidence of shock, which can be obtained from drilling into the structure,” he said.
