While Eddie Jordan believes Lewis Hamilton is too old to beat Max Verstappen if the two teamed up, David Coulthard is confident the Alain Prost-Ayrton Senna duel will be repeated.
Although the Red Bull team has denied that Hamilton could become Verstappen’s team-mate, if only for financial reasons, there is a lot of discussion behind the scenes as to what the situation would be if this were to happen. On the Formula For Success podcast, ex-F1 driver Coulthard asked Eddie Jordan if he thinks Hamilton is too old to beat Verstappen as a teammate?
“Yes,” replied the former owner of the Jordan team. “I think Hamilton would still win some stages, but otherwise a lot of circumstances would have to come together. Max is currently at the best stage in terms of age, experience, confidence and knowledge, he has the necessary people around him in the team. If they raced in the same car at their current years, I think Verstappen would win.”
Meanwhile, the two-time F1 vice-champion Coulthard expresses the opinion that the duels that were observed in the McLaren unit in the late eighties would be repeated.
“I still think Louis would be up to par,” says Coulthard. “If they were riding in the same team, there would definitely be collisions. It would be like between Prost and Senna. On the other hand, Max would have an advantage because Louis is busy with his own interests off the track. Meanwhile, Max works a lot in the simulator, drives in the virtual environment and is completely immersed in everything related to driving.”
