Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a type of virus that can be transmitted through skin contact and sexual intercourse. Of the 100 types of HPV that exist, 40 of them are transmitted through sexual intercourse which can affect the genitals, mouth or throat. HPV is also one of the main causes of cervical cancer. Immunization with the HPV vaccine can be a way to prevent and reduce the risk of cervical cancer.
Benefits of the HPV vaccine
Quoting the DJP of the Ministry of Health, in 2020, cervical cancer cases reached 36,633 cases and ranks second in total cancer cases in Indonesia. This means that cervical cancer is quite common, so Indonesian women need to be aware of it. Therefore it is important for women to get the HPV vaccine immunization to get protection. The HPV vaccine is useful in preventing women from being infected with several types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer, such as HPV types 16 and 18. In addition, the HPV vaccine can also prevent warts from developing due to infection.
Types of HPV vaccine
In Indonesia, there are 2 types of HPV vaccines that can be used, namely Gardasil 4 and Gardasil 9. What differentiates the two is the type of virus that can be prevented.
Gardasil 4 is useful in providing protection from HPV types 6/11/16/18
Gardasil 9 offers wider protection against types of HPV, namely types 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58
Vaccine administration will be carried out 3 times at different time intervals.
The use of the HPV vaccine is fairly minimal risk. Some of the side effects that can appear after immunization can include:
Fever Headache/dizziness Joint pain Swelling at the injection site Vomiting Abdominal pain Diarrhea Muscle aches Nausea
Who can get the HPV vaccination?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the HPV vaccine can be given to children from the age of 9 years. Meanwhile, adults can receive the vaccine up to the age of 45.
Although this vaccine plays a major role in preventing cervical cancer in women, men can also get this vaccine to prevent HPV infection.
Ideally, the vaccine is given before being infected with the virus at all. The reason is that the effectiveness of the vaccine is reduced if a person has been infected with the HPV virus. Even so, vaccination is still recommended because it can protect women from other types of HPV.
Although generally intended to prevent cervical cancer, HPV vaccination can also be given to men. Meanwhile there are several conditions in which a person may not receive vaccinations, namely:
Being pregnant. Having a fever. Being seriously ill
