“After [Krievijas] intervention, our partners in the Russian Federation were duly warned about the need to avoid such actions that will lead to an escalation of tensions in the Black Sea,” the statement said.
On Sunday, a Russian navy ship fired warning shots in the direction of the Palau-flagged ship “Sukru Okan”.
Russian soldiers boarded the ship for an inspection, but then allowed it to continue on its way to the Ukrainian port of Izmail.
Erdogan’s office in Turkey has been criticized for not saying anything about the Russian attack.
As Erdogan’s office explained, Palau should have responded to the incident.
“Although the owner of “Sukru Okan” is a Turkish company, the ship does not have a Turkish flag,” the statement said.
“In international law, the ‘flag state’ is more important than the name of the ship or the identity of the personnel”.
Palau is a Pacific island country. Shipping companies often use its flag to freely access international ports.
