Ukraine Asserts Its Presence and Coordinates Positions at G20 Summit in India

Ukraine’s partners will not negotiate any talks about Ukraine at the G20 summit in India without coordinating positions with Kiev, the country is working to ensure that its voice is heard at this event. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba on the morning of August 17 on the air “1+1”.

“Because the G20 – Russia is included in this format. Unfortunately. And secondly, because India and Russia are quite close partners,” the Foreign Minister said, answering the question why Ukraine is not on the list of invited countries, and the head of the country -the aggressor Vladimir Putin is expected at the summit.

Kuleba does not rule out that Putin will not be at the summit.

“It’s not a fact that Putin will go there again. And [глава МИД РФ Сергей] Lavrov – our partners have already worked out the “ignore Lavrov” technique, he said. “Our partners will not conduct any negotiations on Ukraine without coordinating every position, every element with Ukraine.”

Journalists asked about the steps that Ukraine intends to take to participate in the summit, and whether there is any sense in this (the Foreign Ministry said yesterday that they were working on obtaining an invitation).

“Why kick down the door? There is a dialogue with India, there is a level of communication. The last meeting, which took place in Saudi Arabia, – the representative of India took part, as well as the representative of China, which made the Russians very angry. We are working on a certain format of interaction with the G20, so that the voice Ukraine was heard there,” Kuleba said.

Context:

The G20 summit will be held in New Delhi on September 9-10. On the official G20 website, Ukraine is not among the countries invited to the summit, but it is indicated that Putin’s participation is also expected (Russia is included in the group). On August 16, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirmed at a press conference that permanent members of the group had been invited to the summit of G20 leaders, and Ukraine was not among the nine invited countries.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was invited to the G20 leaders’ summit, which took place in Indonesia last year, after the start of a full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, he took part in it online, presented Ukraine’s proposals “how to restore peace and international order.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin was also invited to a meeting of G20 leaders last year, but he missed it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov went to the summit (he left the meeting ahead of schedule). Putin also missed the G20 summit in Rome in October 2021, a few months before the start of a full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The G20 summit in 2020 was held online due to coronavirus restrictions (Putin took part in this summit).

This year, according to Bloomberg, the Kremlin has released Putin’s schedule for the New Delhi summit period and he can take part in the meeting.
