Western countries are paralyzed by fear of Russia, although they too already know that the Russian army is not “the second in the world”. This was stated by Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the Ukrainian president, UNIAN agency reported.
Only 6-7% of the missile strikes that Russia carries out are aimed at military sites, the rest being civilian infrastructure. That is why Ukraine is asking Western partners to continue the supply of air defense systems. But there are certain problems with that, Podoliak said.
He noted that Ukraine is primarily interested in the American Patriot systems and the Franco-Italian SAMP-T systems, as they are capable of intercepting, in particular, hypersonic ballistic missiles, which Russia has been actively using recently. “At the same time, it would certainly be nice to get the F-16s because they are effective in dealing with ballistic and air-guided bombs used on the front line or in border areas.” We explain all this to our partners, there is an understanding there,” said Podoliak.
The countries of the West, according to Podoliak, are still gripped by a “paralyzing fear” of the threat of a full-scale war, although they understand that Russia no longer has the “second army of the world”. That is why Ukraine’s partner countries are armed with air defenses, fearing the threat of strikes, instead of giving these systems to Ukraine, which will be able to destroy the immediate source of the threat.
So far, Ukraine has failed to convince the West that stopping Russia on Ukrainian soil is the best way to protect the rest of Europe, Podoliak said. According to him, one of the effects of the missile strikes against Ukraine is to maintain this unfounded fear.
