I also think it’s high time for a total ban on smoking materials.’ A fellow physician, Annemiek de Vos, interventional cardiologist at the Heart and Vascular Center of the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, agrees with these words: ‘People in their thirties and forties who end up on my treatment table with a heart attack are almost exclusively smokers.’
‘A healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,’ he also states the Heart Foundation’s own website. ‘In 2030, one in six patients will probably have a heart problem. As far as the Heart Foundation is concerned, there are every reason to designate cardiovascular disease as a common disease and to free up more resources for prevention and research.’
“Is it our own fault that we get sick?” asks the newspaper. Snijder: ‘In principle, yes, because we are the ones who can change that lifestyle if we want to. But it is not made easy for us to make healthy choices. Fatty, salty and sugary food is available everywhere.’ Read more here (paywall).
