Massive Wave of Immigration Overwhelms New York City’s Resources

More than 100,000 immigrants have arrived in the city of NY since April 2022 in an unprecedented wave in recent years, according to the figures offered this Wednesday (08.16.2023) by Mayor Eric Adams.

“As of August 13, 101,200 asylum seekers have passed through the New York asylum system, and 58,500 of them are still in the care of the city,” said the mayor, who underlined the pressure that this places on the entire network of public shelters, where today -immigrants and the homeless added- there are 110,200 people sheltered.

Adams insisted that the city no longer has the space to house so many people: “Honestly, while our compassion is limitless, our resources are not, and we have no miracles left.”

200 emergency centers enabled

After the city’s shelters became overcrowded last year with the arrival of thousands of immigrants and homeless New Yorkers, he had to resort to renting hotels and other places to accommodate them. In total, they have set up 200 emergency centers, some dedicated exclusively to families with children.

“This is a national crisis that demands solutions that extend beyond our city, and the city cannot continue to largely manage it on its own,” Adams reiterated.

The city has been receiving between 300 and 500 people a day, some directly from the border after turning themselves in to authorities and asking for asylum, later transferred by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, and others on his own from other states.

Last week more than 2,700 arrived, highlighted Adams, who has warned that more than 1,700 million have already been spent on caring for migrants, a figure that at the end of three years will amount to more than 12,000 million.

State criticizes crisis management and federal aid does not arrive

The humanitarian crisis caused by the arrival of the immigrants has confronted the governor of the state, Kathy Hochul, and Adams.

In a letter that was released to the media this Friday, the State of New York criticized the way in which the Adams Administration has handled the crisis, noting that they have rejected numerous offers that the State has made to house immigrants.

Likewise, the Government of New York indicated that the Adams Administration has not given priority to helping immigrants to complete their documents and obtain their work permits so that these people can leave the protection of the city.

So far, the federal government has promised the city $140 million in aid, though the Adams Administration has yet to receive any of that money. A spokesperson later clarified that the delay could be due to routine bureaucratic reasons.
