Poliomyetis or polio is a disease that attacks the nervous system in the body and can cause sufferers to experience permanent paralysis. Polio is caused by an infection with the poliovirus virus, which later the virus will invade through the oral and nasal cavities, then the virus enters the blood stream, damaging the motor nervous system in the anterior horns of the spinal cord. Polio is easily contracted when someone has direct contact with the feces and fluids of the patient, especially when the living environment of the patient has poor hygiene and sanitation. There is also evidence that flies can passively spread the polio virus. Most polio sufferers do not realize that they are infected because around 90% of polio sufferers do not cause symptoms or only have mild symptoms and are not recognized. Symptoms of polio are divided into three groups, namely:

1. Non-paralytic polio which causes vomiting; muscle weakness; fever; meningitis; fatigue; sore throat; pain in the head, legs, hands; neck; and back feels stiff and sore.
2. Polio paralysis causes sufferers to have headaches, fever, muscle weakness, weak legs and arms, and loss of body reflexes.
3. Post-polio syndrome causes difficulty breathing or swallowing, difficulty concentrating, muscle weakness, depression, sleep disturbances with difficulty breathing, easy fatigue and reduced body muscle mass.

Polio is implemented as an outbreak (extraordinary event) in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Health (Ministry of Health) prevention of polio can be done by increasing public awareness of the importance of giving polio vaccination to children. By vaccinating the body will recognize the polio virus so that the body will create an immune system that can fight the virus. There are two types of polio vaccine that can be given to children, namely:

1. Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), or a drip polio vaccine that can be given by mouth 4 times at the ages of 1, 2, 3, and 4 months. This vaccine is safe and effective in providing long-term protection, thereby effectively stopping the transmission of the virus.
2. Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV), this vaccine is given by injection (injection) once at the age of 4 months.

Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent polio because there is no medicine for polio it can only be prevented by vaccination. Besides that, prevention of transmission to other people by direct contact (droplets) can be done by using masks for those who are sick or healthy, preventing environmental pollution (fecal-oral), and controlling infection by defecating in places that have good sanitation.
