Cold Weather Combat Training Exchange 2023: Chilean Marine Corps and USMC in Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas. As of this Saturday, August 12, with the arrival of a C-130 military aircraft, belonging to the United States Marine Corps (IM) (USMC), the Cold Weather Combat Training Exchange 2023 began. “Cold Weather Warfare Training Exchange 2023”, an exchange that responds to an advanced stage of training between the Chilean Marine Corps and the United States, which began in 2019 and which, after two years interrupted by the effect of the pandemic , was able to resume last year by running a SMEE “Subject Matter Experience Exchange”.

From this Monday, August 14, to August 25, the IM Detachment No. 4 “Cochrane” will develop a period of training and professional exchange to carry out military operations in a cold climate environment, as well as evaluate the execution of an exchange with a greater number of people and means committed, and the necessary time of operation for it.

For the development of the current exchange training, the “GLACIAR II” Task Unit (UT) was formed, made up of the VICAI Platoon belonging to the IM No. 4 “Cochrane” Detachment, a Staff, a Logistic Support Party and a Reinforced platoon of the United States Marine Corps (USMC).

The training is divided into 3 phases. The first one, which is currently underway, has the objective of placing USMC personnel in the Cochrane Detachment premises, to initiate an induction and familiarization of the area, while allowing the first exchanges between personnel from both countries. During the second phase, between August 15 and 21, military training will take place in an appropriate environment with adverse weather conditions. Finally, between August 21 and 24, as part of the third phase, a training period will take place within the Magallanes Reserve in Punta Arenas, which will allow the application of snow techniques to end with an ascent to the summit of the Mount Tarn, an activity that will mark the end of the training between the Chilean Marine Corps and the US.
