The constant accumulation of harmful heat was a major technical challenge in the development of laser weapons.
Chinese scientists from the National University of Defense Technology have created a new cooling system that allows high-energy lasers to run “indefinitely” without the accumulation of excess heat. About this on Wednesday, August 15, writes the local edition of the South China Morning Post.
Heat buildup has been a major hindrance to the development of laser weapons.
“The new cooling system will allow laser beams to be generated arbitrarily, without degrading performance or interruptions,” the scientists said.
In their opinion, the development will allow creating high-quality rays indefinitely.
“The new cooling system minimizes vibration and improves beam reflection clarity. This can significantly change the nature of the battle by extending the duration, range and destructive power of laser weapons, ”they said.
The scientists explained that the laser, when used along its path, heats up the gas, which creates a turbulent flow. This, in turn, can scatter or distort the beam, reducing its efficiency and accuracy. Now they have created a system for blowing gas through the weapon to remove the waste heat.
The publication writes that China is developing laser weapons to destroy air targets – drones, missiles and aircraft. Such means also seem to provide a “strategic advantage” in conflicts in space.
Recall that Ukraine needs equipment and weapons that can speed up the passage of Ukrainian troops through the areas mined by Russians.
