Dubai to Build Massive Solar-Powered Sea Water Purification Plant for 100% Desalination by 2030

A huge plant to purify sea water using solar energy is coming up in Dubai. The project is supervised by the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority. The authorities handed over the contract to the Saudi Arabian company for the first phase of construction.

A company called ACWA of Saudi Arabia has acquired the contract for the first phase of the sea water purification project, which is expected to cost 91.4 crore dirhams. The Saudi company undertook the construction and operation of the plant capable of producing 180 million gallons of fresh water per day.

This is Dewa’s first independent water treatment project. Tenders were received from 29 international companies for the construction of the plant. On October 18 last year, the names of six companies eligible to participate in the auction were published. The contract was awarded to ACW of Saudi Arabia, which quoted the lowest amount. There is currently a system to treat 490 gallons of salt water per day.

When the new plant is completed in 2026, production will increase to 670 gallons per day. Deeva MD and CEO Saeed Muhammad Al Thayer said that 100 percent desalination will become a reality by 2030. Once the projects are fully completed, the daily water treatment level will reach 730 gallons from 490 gallons.
