Feasibility Study Shows Positive Results for National Vaccine Institute in Uruguay

The rector of Udelar, Rodrigo Arimhad anticipated that a plant was thought to have the capacity to produce 3.5 million doses per year, while the total cost of the plant would be 29 million dollars and it would be developed in an area of ​​3,115 square meters.

Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Udelar, and coordinator of the feasibility analysis of the project, Alvaro Mombruassured, in dialogue with Radio Carve, that the conclusions for the creation of a National Vaccine Institute Uruguayan is “very favourable” and viable not only from a scientific point of view but also from an economic point of view.

“Uruguay can perfectly think of a vaccine institute that can produce them sustainably for export, with a regimen of 3.5 million doses per year working eight hours a day,” explained Mombru, who assured that if more work were done, production could be higher.

In this sense, Mombru explained that not only would vaccines be produced, but that other technological and medical advances could be made. “We would have a structure for vaccines, biological medicinesalso the platform for the human resources training at a high level, but also in a specific area that we do not have today”, explained the dean.

Regarding the development of the institute, from the analysis they assured that the private participation, mainly in the field of exports. On the other hand, it was not stipulated in the project that the institute should be public, private or mixed, but the importance of a governance where several related sectors to this topic can participate.
