Police in London are investigating reports that cultural treasures from the British Museum have been “missing, stolen or destroyed”.
This is stated by the museum in a press release.
The museum states that an employee has been fired in connection with the case, and that they will take legal action against the person.
The objects in question are stated to be small, and stored in a storage room belonging to one of the museum’s collections.
It will be about gold jewelery and precious stones from the period of the 15th century to the 19th century. None of them have been exhibited to the public recently, but have been used in a research context.
Museum director Hartwig Fischer describes the incident as “very unusual”.
– I know that I speak for all colleagues when I say that we take the securing of objects extremely seriously. The museum apologizes for what has happened, but we have now put an end to this – and we are determined to sort things out, says Fischer.
He states that security has been tightened, and that the museum is working with external experts to obtain a complete overview of what is missing, what is damaged and what has been stolen.
