Forty-two Ukrainian children from the cities of Nikopol and Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region, together with thirty-eight companions, have arrived in Italy to spend the summer. They have been received by the dioceses of Senigallia, Ascoli Piceno and Macerata thanks to the support of the Caritas organization and local communities. The initiative has been supported by the Italian Bishops’ Conference and the Apostolic Nunciature in Ukraine.

This project is among others that have allowed more than 600 children and teenagers to enjoy their summer holidays away from the noise and suffering of war. Since the beginning of the conflict, the Italian Caritas organization has been cooperating with Ukrainian charitable organizations to provide assistance to the population. Already in 2022, it responded to the request of Caritas of Ukraine to give the opportunity to spend the summer holidays to around 200 children. Accommodation, recreational and entertainment activities are provided for children and their companions in Italy.
According to the director of Italian Caritas, priest Marco Pagniello, “these children, without a doubt, dream of peace, of returning to normal life, of being able to go to school, to hug their friends again and many also their fathers, who are currently at the front. Several of these children come from orphanages and have the opportunity to be included in a family, just as the children from Chernobyl were given this opportunity several years ago.
