The owner of the Mondriaantoren and insurance company Nationale Nederlanden have not succeeded in preventing the plans for new homes and offices around the Amstel station. The Council of State has ruled that the plans of the municipality may go ahead.
It’s about the plan Amstel station – Amsteloever, with 1300 to 2100 new homes and 100,000-170,000 square meters of offices to be built. The municipality also wants an (underground) bicycle shed with 5,300 spaces and a renovated station hall on the west side of the Amstel station.

But the company behind the Mondriaantoren and the insurance company fear, among other things, that their business climate will be affected. They came up with various arguments to show that the plan could not go ahead. For example, they had their own traffic research done. One of the conclusions of that study was that no solution was offered for the increase in traffic density in the plan area, which is already significant at the moment. This refers to cyclists who cycle in front of the entrance to the parking garage of the Mondriaantoren.
Also, vacancy in the area is already increasing and with the arrival of the new offices even more so. There would now be mainly relatively small to medium-sized tenants in the offices, large users would be more interested in Zuidoost or the Zuidas.

Council of State
The Council of State did not find that the argument about the vacancy had been made plausible. The increase in the number of cyclists was also no reason to block the plan, because ‘the present plan does not have to contribute to solving an existing traffic problem in the plan area and its surroundings’.
Work on the area will continue until 2030.
