The Ministry of Welfare (ML) and the association “Latvijas Autisma Apvienė” (LAA) invite every adult person with autism to participate in support groups from August 26 to 30. Adults who have been diagnosed with autism by a specialist doctor, family doctor or psychologist are invited to participate.
Support groups take place within the framework of the European Social Fund project “Improving the support system of social services” implemented by the Ministry of Welfare, where LAA implements a new psychosocial rehabilitation service for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their family members. The implementation of the activity consists of three stages – creation of the service description, its application during the implementation of the pilot project and evaluation of the results, as well as improvement of the developed description according to the results.
In the support groups planned at the end of August, LAA has invited specialists from Latvia and Denmark to share their experience and encourage our part of society. It is not uncommon for individuals with autism to experience a withdrawal of support by the time they reach adulthood. However, an autistic child becomes an autistic adult, who demands and expects as much in life as a non-autistic person. Autism is not a disease, it cannot be cured, it is an integral part of a person’s personality, which is often hidden because of the fear of being misunderstood, misunderstood or rejected.
In the workshops planned as part of the project on August 26, 27 and 30, the participants will strengthen their self-confidence, make new friends, share their experiences, and develop public speaking skills.

“With this meeting, our idea is to restart support groups for young people and adults with autism, as well as to promote the opinion and experience of adults to be heard both in seminars and conferences, in the media and elsewhere. We want the visit of this team to be the beginning of a meeting for groups of interests, support groups and a point of support for each other in Latvia as well”, says Līga Bērziņa, head of LAA.
Qualified specialists will work in the support groups. Monika Posta is a scientist who was diagnosed with autism as an adult, she speaks a lot at conferences, talking about autism and trying to normalize life in autism. Martine Delfos is a researcher, psychotherapist, writer and teacher who has dedicated her life to various psychosocial topics, including autism and the statement that a person with autism is the same as all of us – with feelings, emotions, thoughts, dreams, the ability to love and the desire to be accepted. Krista Vāvere, on the other hand, is a professional speech coach, who not only teaches how to express yourself logically, how to keep the main idea in a conversation, but also techniques for solving various conflict situations in a conversation and stress reduction techniques before any performance.
