American Ryan Toney was not granted a residence permit after his wife Maria died of cancer. The couple had not lived long enough in Norway before she died.
But now the Immigration Service (UNE) has turned around. The 27-year-old can stay in Norway for the next three years, and can then apply for permanent residence.
It writes Our country Today.
Ryan received the good news from his lawyers on Tuesday this week, according to the newspaper.
– It means that I can finally live a normal life again – without fear of being thrown out of the country, he writes on Facebook.
Vårt Land writes that they have been in contact with lawyer Tone Ljoså, who confirms that Toney has been granted a residence permit in accordance with section 38 of the Immigration Act.
Didn’t live long enough
NRK wrote about the fate of the young married couple earlier this summer.
The couple met when both were studying in Alaska. Maria had lived in Norway with her family and they therefore chose to establish themselves in Lillehammer.

But then Maria fell ill. She contracted an aggressive cancer and died last year.
The couple had only seven months together in Norway.
Toney applied for right of residence on the basis that he was married to an EEA citizen, but in order to obtain the right of residence according to these rules, it is required that you live in Norway with your spouse for at least 12 months.
Tired of grief
But Ryan sees Norway as his home and wants to stay. This is where he has his network now.
– I can’t breathe and I’m tired. Really tired.
A despairing Ryan told NRK earlier this summer.
– I can’t mourn in the same way as the others, because I have to keep fighting.
Ryan complained about the refusal from UDI and it has therefore led.
Now the Immigration Board has given the 27-year-old a second chance in the form of residence for three years, before he can then apply for permanent residence if he still wishes.
NRK has not yet received a comment from Ryan Toney today.
